Due to the rising incidence of adverse effects related to herbal medication use and poor knowledge of their composition and interactions in developing countries, this study will create awareness to patients on the morbidity and mortality associated with indiscriminate use of herbal medications, discourage patients from prioritizing herbal medications over medical treatment when ill, and always visit the hospital for treatment purposes. In this study, assessment was made on the perception, usage and knowledge on herbal medicines among the people of selected. The local people of Reserveline in Sivakasi and Noorsahipuram near Srivilliputhur of Virudhunagar District (Tamil Nadu) were surveyed to explore the therapeutic medicinal plants used in folk medicine in the study area. The medicinal plants knowledge among the people were surveyed and recorded. During the survey, 43 indigenous plants from 24 different families were recorded. Among plant parts, leaves were the most used in the form of powder. Among the plants listed most of the plants were used as leaf (79%), about 2% were stem, bark, flower and gel and the remaining 4% were either bulb or rhizome. Among the plants reported majority of the plants were used for skin diseases (30%), 7% of reported plants were used for ailments related to cough, cold, head ache and asthma, whereas 9% of plants were used as anti-inflammatory agents and remaining 2% were used for ailments like kidney diseases, bladder problems, deworming and gut health.
