description Description
Microplastics (MPs) are widespread, highly persistent contaminants that have infiltrated our ecosystems and pose a serious risk to both the environment and human health. MPs are a pervasive environmental threat linked to human health problems. The rapid growth in synthetic plastic production and inadequate waste management are key factors driving the prevalence of MPs. MPs have a significant impact on everyday life as they have been detected in the food we eat and the air we breathe, raising concerns about their potential health effects. Recent research has identified MPs in blood, brain and every organ of our system, underscoring the urgent need to understand their influence on our bodies. They have been implicated in causing systemic toxicity and chronic disorders, including metabolic syndrome, neurological diseases, immunological dysregulation, reproductive dysfunctions, and cancer. They also trigger biochemical reactions like oxidative stress, inflammation, endocrine disruption, and genotoxicity. This review highlights the sources of MPs and their effects on human health. The discussion includes different kinds of plastics, where they come from, and how they enter human systems. It is crucial to understand the biological interactions and possible health effects of these contaminants as they become more common in our ecosystems.
